Get Outback with the Richmond Fossil Festival If you are pondering on what to do this May Day long weekend, then look no further. The 2010 BHP Billiton Cannington Richmond Fossil Festival promises to be a memorable fun filled weekend for all ages. In Richmond an ancient world awaits you to discover! Get a glimpse into the prehistoric past, as the world was 100 million years ago during the cretaceous period, when Richmond was submerged under the vast Ancient Inland Sea. The foundation of this town is built on providing a unique glimpse into the prehistoric past, as the world was 100 million years ago during the cretaceous period. Richmond tells the story of when this region was submerged under the vast Ancient Inland Sea. In that sea lived a variety of all creatures great and small, whose remains have provided us with perhaps the finest fossils found anywhere on earth. You are invited to share the wonder at this year's Fossil Festival, celebrating Richmond's Unique Fossil Heritage. Activities include dinosaur tours, prehistoric cartoon workshops, fossil preparation and sculpture workshops, rodeo, camel races, moon rock throwing and loader pull competitions, bush poetry, the hole in one golf challenge and for the car enthusiasts a show and shine.
Festival Program Field trips and fossil hunting trips during the festival range from $55 - $110 per person. You can collect your own fossils and have them identified. Learn useful collecting tips from leading amateur and professional Paleontologists and visit some of the best sites for finding fossils in Richmond. If you are chasing some of the faster action, catch all the thrills and spills of the Richmond Rodeo. The main event begins from 6.30pm. Bar and Food Stalls operating throughout the night. The camel races on Saturday and regular appearances by Krono for the kids Saturday night be entertained with the Cairns based band Shari and the Mice. Your visit wouldn’t be complete without taking a gallery tour of the internationally acclaimed Kronosaurus Korner. Over the weekend enjoy May Day Family Sports Day including kid’s dinosaur activities with the Pterosaur Chuck and MinMi Roll. Plus there is bush poetry, the hole in one golf challenge with $2000 prize money up for grabs. Feeling strong? Why not have a go at the world champion moon rock throwing competitions with prize money of $50 children and $250 for ladies and $250 for men, proudly sponsored by QGAP Pre-entry required with only $5per adult or Mini’s 7 and under and Junior 8 – 15yo $2 for two throws per child. Or get a team of 4 together and test your strength against the weight with the Loader Pull. Only $40 entry ($10pp) and prize money up for grabs is $500 for men and $500 for ladies. Townsville Model Motorboat ClubThe Townsville Model Motorboat Club will conduct demonstrations on Saturday May 1 and Sunday May 2 on the Boat Ramp side of the Lake. Hire Boats and Bumper Boats will be available for the kids free of charge. There will be demonstrations of model sailing boats and handicap racing. Plus model power boat displays, and a variety of small electric through to 5 foot versions running a small pocket bike engine. Camel Races
