Michelle Clarke has been in local government in both Queensland and New South Wales for 25 years. Michelle has been CEO of the Richmond Shire Council in Outback Queensland since October 2005. Before that she was Deputy CEO for the Aurukun Shire Council, Cape York, Queensland (an Aboriginal community) and a Corruption Prevention Officer for the Crime and Misconduct Commission, working with Councils in Queensland. She started her career as a Corporate Development Officer for the Port Stephens Shire Council in New South Wales. Michelle spent six months on secondment with the Department of Local Government, Planning Sport and Recreation in 2002. She worked on the Systems Improvement Program resulting in the Best Practice Guide for Agendas and Minutes. In her career with the CMC Michelle wrote the series of Prevention Pointers in the Councillor Information Kit and provided Corruption Prevention training to Councils throughout Queensland. Michelle has a Bachelor of Law and Administration from Newcastle University and won an Industry Achievement Award from the Training and Development Institute of Australia for her work on the CMC publication ‘Grassroots of Ethical Conduct’. She has also won an Excellence in Workmanship Award from the Rotary Club of Brisbane West and a Client Satisfaction Award for her development and implementation of a strategy aimed at management of complaints in the lead up to Queensland Local Government Elections in 2000. Michelle has been a Board member of Local Government Managers Australia Queensland since October 2008. Michelle and her husband Scott have two boys, Mitchell and Daniel and as a family love to go camping, fishing and generally enjoy the outdoors.
